Welcome to Temple, New Hampshire
The town of Temple, NH was incorporated 26 Aug 1768, & named for the Hon. John Temple. It is located in the southwestern part of Hillsborough County. This township embraced several tracts of land granted to individuals by the government of Massachusetts prior to 1740, & the territory was granted by the Masonian proprietors in November, 1750. For a number of years it was called Peterborough Slip, and included the present town of Sharon, NH, & when Temple was incorporated, in 1768, a tier of lots on the west side of Wilton & the easterly portion of Peterborough Slip (or Sliptown) was included. Later, areas from New Ipswich, Peterborough, & Lyndeborough were also annexed into Temple, NH.
Temple was the site of the first glass factory in the colonies at the end of the Revolutionary War, and produced the first high grade window class ever made in New England.
The boundary disputes between Massachusetts & New Hampshire, and the various annexations and redrawn boundary lines between the towns in this area, make colonial research quite a challenge.
Temple is a throwback to simpler times. Town residents all know one another and still gather in the town centre. A typical New England town, with typical New England charm. Although the population is a little over 1,500 people, the rural feel of the community is its main attraction.
Although less than a 45 minutes drive to Nashua and Manchester NH, it's just a short ride to Peterborough and it's many shops and restaurants.
