Welcome to Litchfield, New Hampshire
A rural farming town of 7,975 people, Litchfield nestles quietly along the Merrimack River, a bedroom community of primarily single family homes and little industry. Sandwiched between the two largest cities in southern New Hampshire, Nashua and Manchester, Litchfield is known for its roadside stands and farming produce. The town center, a quaint mixture of town hall, library, church and fire station, is clustered along the main thoroughfare, Route 3A, across from the Merrimack River. While the population has increased nearly sevenfold since 1960, Litchfield residents have been able to plan ahead to maintain a balance of farmland, small businesses and residential neighborhoods.
Because of its abundance of as yet undeveloped land and its bucolic character, Litchfield has become one of the fastest growing communities in southern New Hampshire. It took this long for Litchfield to become popular because of its relative lack of access to major highways compared to surrounding communities. The growth has put a strain on town and school facilities; In March 1997, voters approved expanding Litchfield Middle School and building a new town hall/police station.
The eventual coming of a major highway, the Nashua-Hudson Circumferential Highway, is predicted to bring even more growth to the town, which relies almost solely on residential property taxes. The roadway will connect Litchfield to the F.E. Everett Turnpike in Merrimack via a new bridge over the Merrimack River. Some see the project - which has no scheduled start date - as a future boon to town, while others predict it will wreck the country atmosphere.
Chartered in 1734, this town on the east bank of the Merrimack River is one of the smallest in the area, about 8,500 acres. In 1656, Litchfield and Merrimack were both part of a grant made by Massachusetts known as Naticook, the Indian name for the area. In 1656, Massachusetts granted the greater part of Naticook to William Brenton and it was known as Brenton’s Farm. In 1728, the 16 residents of Brenton’s Farm petitioned to become a separate town to be called Litchfield. A few years later, the town added some land from Nottingham, the predecessor to Hudson. Litchfield remained essentially an agricultural town until recently and remains well known for its produce.

The town of Litchfield has consistently supported the efforts of the schools and the quality of the services provided. The town will be asked to approve construction of a new elementary school this year in order to accommodate the growing population.
Litchfield students in all three schools have consistently scored at or above the state average on the annual New Hampshire assessment tests. Terra Nova tests are given at grade 4 and at grade 7. These scores are also strong when compared to the national norm. The average SAT scores of our graduating seniors are also well above the New Hampshire state average and also above the national average.
Curriculum alignment to state and national standards, differentiated instruction, honors options, formative assessment, and data-based decisions are the focus of the Litchfield School Board as well as the staff in all schools. Collaboration and ongoing communication exists at all levels throughout the district.
In addition to academics, the Litchfield schools offer students a wealth of athletics, both competitive and intramural, as well as a very strong band and choral program, various clubs and enrichment activities.
In its third year as an independent school district, Litchfield strives to provide the highest quality educational experiences for all of its students. Education in Litchfield is truly viewed as a comprehensive effort of the entire town.
