Welcome to Bedford, New Hampshire
|
|
Located about 50 miles from Boston, Bedford is known as an upscale bedroom community for executives commuting to Manchester, Nashua, Concord and Boston. Recently it has gained favor as an outstanding location for businesses. Bedford is made up of about 79 percent residences and 21 percent businesses. The town has created a masterplan to direct commercial growth so that the lifestyle of its residents is not compromised.
Most of the town’s commerce falls along the Route 3 corridor, extending from Manchester to Merrimack. The Bedford Mall, small businesses, restaurants and the private Manchester Country Club are located along this area, termed ‘the performance zone.’ Route 101 is another commercial zone featuring upscale housing developments and office buildings. Near the quaint town center are old farm areas where many of Bedford’s lifelong citizens reside. Bedford has a first-rate educational system and superior recreational facilities while maintaining a comparatively low and stable tax base.
The Town recently acquired a 312-acre parcel known as the Joppa Hill Farm, which will be used for conservation and recreational purposes. Previously, the Town acquired the 27-acre Benedictine property, which will also be used for conservation and passive recreation such as hiking and sledding.
In 2000, the Town officially dedicated Legacy Park, a 70-acre facility that includes soccer, softball, and baseball fields; cross-country ski trails and warming hut; basketball courts; tennis courts; and a skateboard park. Increased recreation fields have allowed the Town to expand its youth sports programs to include football and lacrosse

Bedford School System-District Highlights
With input from staff and parents, the district developed a new standards-based report card for grades kindergarten through four, piloting it in the spring of 2005. This report to parents details students' progress in relation to district standards as well as progress in individual academic growth.
The Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) computer adaptive testing program is administered to all students in grades three through eight. This testing gives teachers immediate information regarding the instructional levels of their students in mathematics, reading and language usage each fall. Individual student growth is measured through spring testing as well.
At the Annual School District Meeting in March 2005, voters approved a middle school/high school complex, to open for grades seven through ten in September 2007, with the junior and senior classes being added in the ensuing two years. The schools have been named the Ross A. Lurgio Middle School and the Bedford High School.
